I finished my last Architecture final yesterday. Five years ago I thought it was my dream to live in New York and be an Architect, and I’ve slowly become more and more aware I want nothing to do with either of those things. So now I have a couple weeks before I graduate, and I have to decide what the hell I actually want to do with my life.
I’ll be moving back to Cleveland next month with my girlfriend, and I’ll actually be able to daily drive my GTA for the first time in about a year. I’m planning on selling it before winter though, as Ohio winters and 30 year old GM products don’t have the best relationship.
I don’t post here much anymore but I try to keep up to date with everyone on Oppo, how are you all doing?

You could just sell crack like Zoidberg does. At least, that’s what he
says
he does, whenever you ask him what he does...

I have a coworker who went to architect school, got a degree and went to work as an architect, hated it, quit, then became a civil CAD designer. He’s still doing the civil design to this day and said he hated being an architect.

Not a bad idea

It’s mostly the sitting at a desk all day that I don’t like... But yeah it’s definitely not for everyone

Yeah the desk time is tough. I prefer being in the field doing construction management and inspection tasks over the desk time.

When I graduated high school I was certain I wanted to be an architect, so that’s what I originally went to college for. 14 years later, and I’m an analytical chemist. We’re all trying to navigate our way through life. Good luck with the next step.

Off topic, but is someone doing FFF today? I’m travelling and locked out of my mail, so haven’t been able to check what is happening.
Edit: Looks like Krabby is doing it?

Krabby said it will be a little late today.

Thanks man! Yeah I think there’s a big difference between appreciating architecture and enjoying being an architect, and I definitely didn’t realize that when I started out.

I took architecture classes in high school and enjoyed designing with AutoCAD. Then I went to college and the first year was all “draw this bowl of fruit” or “draw this naked woman.”
Not to mention the enormous time commitment. I knew that I didn’t have it in me.

Totally agree... I think there’s a benefit to that though, in that architecture school teaches you skills in a lot of other fields. But yeah the time commitment is ridiculous. I’m looking forward to having a job I don’t have to think about after 5pm, and weekends that I can actually enjoy.

Unsolicited advice:
My wife has her degree, but is not licensed yet. Now that they allow you to take the exams before completing your internship, do it. Schedule your exams as quickly as you can so the information is fresh. My poor wife has been struggling, especially since a lot has changed since she graduated. Now she’s not just reviewing what she learned, she’s also having to learn material she’s never seen before.
Oh yeah, congratulations !

It’s absolutely beneficial, it just wasn’t for me.
I work in a contract pharma lab. Thanks to client confidentiality, I’m not allowed to take my work home. They kick us out by 5:15. It’s wonderful.

Hey, I’ll take any advice I can get! It really depends on where I end up working after I move back home. I’m going to apply in a few fields which seem interesting to me, but if I can’t find anything there’s at least one architecture firm I’ll be able to work at. And who knows, maybe I’ll enjoy it more then and I will take my license tests!

if architecture isn’t your thing, become a porn star?

Been there done that. I’d avoid it.
